Kate Prynne
Born in England, Kate grew up in the Middle East and Africa
where she started studying art. Her Grandmother’s collection
of Victorian jewellery – Venetian glass, amber and precious
stones – fascinated her and started her life long interest in
jewellery.
Kate moved to Australia in the 1960’s and began collecting
both art and jewellery. Back in England for a few years,
Kate met and married a figurative artist, with whom visits
to the London Galleries and summer art courses at Falmouth
were a way of life. The Pre-Raphaelite exhibition at the Tate
inspired Kate to make jewellery after seeing depictions of
jewellery in Rossetti’s paintings. Kate started silver-smithing
while in the UK, 23 years ago, however it was not till later
that Kate took up jewellery making.
A visit to Byron Bay started Kate back on the path of jewellery
making after taking a short course by a jeweller there. Her
love of colour and stones together with silver smithing and the
use of silk, is allowing Kate to express her artistic talents in the
form of beautiful pieces of wearable art. Kate uses semi precious
gemstones and sources them both locally and throughout the world.
She works from her home in the rainforest in Kuranda.
