A friend, who thought I was a great cook, encouraged me to make Curries, Samosas, Chutneys and Pickles and I began to sell them in the markets in Kuranda and at Rusty's Market in Cairns. At the time I was a multicultural support worker in early learning childcare centres in the Cairns region. Once a week I would do some Indian cooking with the children and they would love the food they helped prepare.
The response to my initial market food stall encouraged me to extend the variety of my products. I decided to concentrate on creating a business making and selling my Northern Indian curries and condiments and so ended my days working in childcare centres. Within a few months of working at the markets I bought a small business in a shop in Kuranda and Kamla's Kitchen became the Indian place to eat in Kuranda.
Having the shop enabled me to spend more time with my daughters. They helped me on weekends and during school holidays, and earned their pocket money, and they in turn learned to cook from their mother.
Nowadays I make my products in my licensed and approved kitchen at my beautiful home, set in the tropical rainforest of Kuranda, Far North Queensland, Australia.
The next step in my dream is to write a recipe book using the many special and unique recipes I use that I haven't seen in other Indian recipe books.
In the meantime, I am looking forward to further extending my products and providing great Indian food to my wonderful customers, not just in Kuranda but where possible the world over.
